HIIT
HIIT stands for High-intensity interval training. It is a form of interval training, a cardiovascular exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with short recovery periods.
HIIT has been shown to have many benefits improving: aerobic and anaerobic fitness; blood pressure; cardiovascular health; insulin sensitivity (which helps the exercising muscles more readily use glucose for fuel to make energy); cholesterol profiles; and abdominal fat and body weight while maintaining muscle mass.
HIIT training can easily be modified for all fitness levels. HIIT workouts provide the same fitness benefits as continuous endurance workouts, but in shorter periods of time. This is because HIIT workouts tend to burn more calories than traditional workouts, especially after the workout. The post-exercise period is called “EPOC”, which stands for excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. This is generally about a 2-hour period after an exercise bout where the body is restoring itself to pre-exercise levels, and therefore using more energy. Because of the vigorous contractile nature of HIIT workouts, the EPOC generally tends to be greater, adding about 6 to 15% more calories to the overall workout energy expenditure.
Classes run for 30 minutes on a Tuesday evening (6:00pm) & Friday morning 9:15am (45 mins).
A very friendly pleasant environment in which to get fit and maintain fitness, always well planned and structured, with small classes, you are encouraged to work hard and push yourself at your own level.
The varied exercises are regularly changed to keep it fresh and interesting, not forgetting the excellent stretching during the warm up and cool down.
I always walk away on a Tuesday night feeling fit and healthy and knowing it has done me good, and look forward to the next Tuesday session.
